This is the Second World War as you have never seen it before.

The international production team has scoured the film archives of the world for the finest images of World War Two and these have then been digitally colourised in a painstaking process that took three days to colour each minute of film. The result is that the war looks as though it happened yesterday, not seventy years ago.

There have been countless images, newsreels, documentaries and films about the Second World War and many would argue that we have seen all that has to be seen. Apocalypse offers a completely new insight into the war with evocative and provocative footage brought alive in colour, alongside the personal accounts of those who witnessed and fought the war at first-hand.

The digital colourisation has been scrupulously done using existing colour images as guide.

Amongst the most moving segments are extraordinary scenes from the Eastern Front, horrifying images from the Warsaw Ghetto, the battle for Stalingrad, the D-Day landings and barbaric scenes from the Final Solution.

This documentary, originally from NOVA/PBS in the USA, sheds new light on the sinking of the USS Arizona during World War II.

For decades it has been thought that a bomb dropped by a Japanese aircraft sank the Arizona. However, the discovery of a group of small Japanese submarines in and around Pearl Harbour has raised questions about the battleship’s final hours.

This film follows a team of expert investigators, who journey to the seafloor to explore the wreckage of a newly discovered sub, and questions whether this mini-sub, and its two-person crew, made it into Pearl Harbour to fire torpedoes at the Arizona.

With unprecedented access to the remains of the Arizona and other unique evidence, including aerial photos taken by Japanese aircraft and testimonials from US and Japanese veterans, Killer Subs in Pearl Harbour investigates the possibility that these tiny but lethal mini-subs may have played a crucial and previously unsuspected part in the tragic events of that ‘Day of Infamy’.

Corradino Durruti’s film, showing in the True Stories strand, is a chilling insight into the ‘Ndrangheta, the ‘Cosa Nostra’ of the Calabria region of Italy, told through the cat-and-mouse game in one small city between the local boss Toto Crea, the forces of law-and-order out to nail him and the corrupt officials who protect him.

The ‘Ndrangheta are just as fearsome and just as feared as their Sicilian brothers but being family based, rarely admitting non-blood members, are all the harder to infiltrate or divide. But in 2000, the people of the small city of Rizziconi had had enough and through a fierce anonymous letter writing campaign, managed to get the city council dissolved by the Italian president.

In addition, the government appointed prosecutor Roberto Pennisi and Inspector Nico Morroni to look into the activities of the Crea family, an inquiry that was to take seven years before the truth was reached.

In June 2009, disgraced financier Bernard L Madoff was sentenced to 150 years in prison after pleading guilty to defrauding thousands of investors out of billions of dollars in a giant Ponzi scheme (existing shareholders are paid not from profits but from new investors’ money).

This documentary, presented by top American journalist Martin Smith, follows Madoff’s career, from his first job at his father-in-law’s firm to his incarceration. Among those featured are Harvey L Pitt, former Securities and Exchange Commission chairman, hedge fund executive Sandra Manzke, one of Madoff’s early admirers, and larger-than-life accountant Michael Bienes, who steered clients to Madoff in the 1960s.
