Ancient World with Bettany Hughes
Editor
8 x 3’40″, Flashback Television for More4
Bettany Hughes tells the definitive history of the ancient world and classical civilisation, beginning with a new film about Alexandria.
Once mightier than both Rome and Athens, it was founded by Alexander the Great to be the seat of all knowledge.
With a cast of characters that includes Archimedes, Julius Caesar and Cleopatra, this is the story of its rise and its dramatic collapse: the destruction of the Great Library and the incalculable loss of nearly all the knowledge of the ancient world, from the dawn of civilisation to the fall of the Roman Empire.
The season – coming to More4 in early 2010 – will also provide a chance to see Bettany’s classic histories of the ancient world, from Helen of Troy to the military might of Sparta and from the glories of Mycenae to the achievements of the Moors in Europe.
